Kid Rocket Wins at Bedford Speedway

By Laura Cornman

BEDFORD, PA –

The Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model series invaded the speedway Friday evening, accompanying them were the limited late models.  Forty two super late model drivers filled the pit area for the Appalachian Mountain Speed Week Finale.  The $1000.00 purse lured a total of thirty five limited late model drivers to the event.

Austin Hubbard, a mere seventeen years old, set the fast time of 19.765 during time trials for the Appalachian Mountain Series. Winners of the super late model heat races were Greg Fetters, Josh Richards, Rick Eckert, and Jeff Rine.  The Miller Auto Parts limited late model division ran a sum of four heat races; winners included Steve Bard, Allen Lemin, Mike Duck, and Daniel Cornman.

The thundering herd saluted their fans as they drove four-wide before the start of the feature event. DJ Meyers held the lucky pole position as he led the flock to the start of the forty lap chase.  Josh Richards (AKA Kid Rocket) took over the lead in turn three on the first lap and began to extend his lead.  Greg Fetters, who held the fifth position, drove hard to keep his position against Rick Eckert.  With seven laps in the book, a caution was brought out due to debris on the front stretch.  Kid Rocket led the way to the cone.  Jason Covert quickly challenged Rocket for the lead, Rocket stayed strong.  Richards began tangling with the marbles, allowing Covert to gain ground.  JT Spence fought his way through the pack and took over the fourth position.  Jeremy Miller and Eckert battled for Spence’s position, Eckert prevailed.  The fight for the chase intensified as the leaders began facing lap traffic.  Richards remained focused while swiftly driving through lap traffic, Covert followed his lead.  Covert pressured Richards and captured the lead.  Covert’s lead proved to be bitter sweet as he continued to deal with lap traffic.  With fifteen laps to go the caution was brought out.  Rick Eckert, now in third, began pressuring Rocket for the second place position.  Jack Pencil, who started twelfth, fought his way to the eighth place position.  Covert continued to show the way as Rocket and Eckert scuffled for the second place spot.  Rocket outlasted Eckert and challenged Covert for the lead with two laps to go.  Once within striking distance, his pressure proved to be just enough as he made his winning pass with just one lap to go!

Daniel Cornman escorted the pack of twenty eight limited late models to the drop of the green flag.  Unfortunately, before a full lap was turned several cars became intertwined on the front stretch.  Once more Cornman showed the way to the cone.  The struggle deepened in the rear of the field, as each driver fought hard for their position. With two laps down, Rick Singleton fell off the pace and brought out the caution.  Cornman brought the field up to speed again.  Tim Smith Jr. took a look at Cornman’s inside door, yet Cornman held his line.  Brandon Hoover and Allen Lemin fought for the fourth place position; Lemin lost the handle and spun between turns one and two.  Matt Parks pulled off a pass against Derek Byler allowing him to obtain the fourth place position.  Meanwhile, Cornman continued to stretch his lead.  Mike Duck followed closely behind Byler as he waited to make his move.  Smith Jr. sat comfortably in the second place position as he followed Cornman’s lead.  With twelve laps to go, the caution was brought out due to debris on the front stretch.  Smith Jr. gained ground and began challenging Cornman for the lead.  After a nineteen lap lead Smith Jr. pulled off a pass against Cornman. Cornman continued to trail his lead.  With two laps to go, Byler moved into the second place position.  Smith Jr.’s position was solidified as he drove into victory lane.

Super late models, limited late models, street stocks, hobby stocks, and 4-cylinders are on the schedule for next week! Be sure to stop by the pavilion next week, there will be Williams Grove Old Timers and Legend autographs from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00p.m.
