PENCIL WINS BEDFORD SEASON OPENER
By Dave Harclerode
BEDFORD, PA - The Bedford Speedway kicked off the 2007 racing season Friday night with a very entertaining four division show. Jack Pencil came from deep in the pack to win the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model feature, and DJ Troutman, who pulled double duty racing both Super Lates and Limited Lates, won the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model Feature. Daniel Cornman won the TC Race Cars Street Stock race, and Derrick Hinish earned his first ever win in the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks.
Bedford resident Jack Pencil started 10th the Super Late Model feature line up, and wasted very little time getting to the front. Second starting Greg Fetters took the early lead, but by lap 10, Pencil had already worked his way into second, and was knocking on the door. On lap 12, Pencil zoomed into the lead, and retained a comfortable lead for the distance. Fetters remained in second to the checkered, with Dave Troutman third, Jeff Rine fourth, and fifth DJ Troutman. Rounding out the top ten was Scott Rhodes, Ron Delano (from 20th), Larry Wright, Wayne Johnson, and Andy Martz. The scorekeepers had to pay close attention, as fourth through seventh came across the line neck and neck. The win was Pencil's 18th career Super Late Model win at Bedford. Heat race winners were Dave Troutman, Fetters, and Jeff Miller. Tom Decker took a nasty ride in the first heat race, barrel rolling his brand new Lazer chassis in turn four. Tom was uninjured, but his car was in bad shape.
DJ Troutman, who had a great 5th place finish in the Super Late Model main running the Rick Jones owned # 88, climbed into the Troutman family owned # 7 to start the Limited Late Model feature in the third position. A full field of 25 very competitive cars took the green, and it was Troutman who took the victory, fending off challenges from runner up Justin Kann the entire race. Pole sitter Andy Teno finished third, with Tim Smith, Jr. and Mike Altobelli, Jr. rounding out the top five. Craig Perigo finished sixth, with Shawn Claar, Brian Lowery, and Donnie Farlling, and Randy Burkholder completing the top ten. Altobelli, Shoemaker, and Smith won the qualifying events.
Although the Street Stock car count was poor, each driver that started the race was more than capable of pulling off the victory. Daniel Cornman earned his 12th career Bedford win, and he was followed at the line by Bob Jay, Terry Wyles, Mooch Cornell, and Donald Wyles. Unfortunately, only two other cars started the feature, with a both drivers not finishing: Michael Stiffler in sixth, Brandon Hoover seventh, and Rick Cragan, who didn't start. Cornman and Jay won the heats.
Several first time racers saw their first action ever in the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks. A nice field of cars ran their feature event caution free, and Derrick Hinish picked up his first career win in dominating fashion. Hinish held a comfortable lead the entire distance, winning over Chuck Weyant, Devin Weyandt, Reed Stickel, Jr., and Brandon LaSalle. Heat winners were Stickel, Hinish, and Chuck Weyant.
Next Friday, April 27th will be another regular 4 division show featuring the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Models, Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Models, TC Race Cars Street Stocks, and Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5pm, with hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30pm. Coming May 13th, it's the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint cars, along with Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks.
