HAUS EXTENDS STREAK TO 11 YEARS WITH BEDFORD WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Bedford Speedway takes great pride in it's rich history, and fans got to see a reminder of Bedford's past on Friday night.  The Williams Grove Old Timers Association was on hand, with several vintage racecars on display for fans to enjoy.  Highlighting the Old Timers event was a 15 minute set of fast laps, with Bedford's own Jim Nave parading around the speedway in the very same Ford Mustang # 32 that he drove to a championship at the Speedway in 1975.  The famous blue and white late model is owned and was restored by Somerset's Bud Garvey, owner of several restored vintage racecars.

Scott Haus picked up his 31st career Super Late Model win Friday evening, and most fans are aware that he is the all-time leader in late model feature wins.  However, many are unaware of another record Scott holds.  Eleven straight years with atleast one win, an incredible feat considering the tough competition at the famed 5/8 mile oval.

Haus took the lead early, with pole sitter Chris Harr and second generation driver Andy Martz trailing behind.  Ron Delano, Jr., who was impressively fast all evening, worked his way past Martz and Harr and drove the wheels off his car trying to reel Haus in.  Meanwhile, Scotty Rhodes was moving to the front from his tenth starting spot.  Looking like the Rhodes of 2003 when he won 7 Bedford Feature events, Scott picked them off one by one until he ran out of time, settling for 4th spot.  Back at the front, Delano closed the gap on Haus to four or five car lengths, but lapped traffic was in Haus' favor.  Every time Delano was set to mount a serious challenge, Haus would clear a lapped car, handing the task to Delano.  Haus maintained that five car length lead all the way to the finish line, with Delano, Harr, Rhodes, and Jeff Rine finishing the top five.  Devin Friese, DJ Troutman, Wayne Johnson, Eric Zembower and Nick Dickson completed the top ten.  Haus drove a smooth, fast race, but almost gave it all away with 10 laps to go.  After clearing a lapped car on the backstretch, he drove into turn three with a massive amount of speed.  Haus backed it up the track, throttle mashed to the floor.  He avoided the outside wall by mere inches, saving the car and the win.

Heat winners were Haus, Harr, and Friese.

Mike Shoemaker used some late racing passing to move from the fifth spot to finish second in the Limited Late Model feature.  However, race winner Brian Duffy refused a post race tech inspection, therefore handing the win to Shoemaker.  Shoemaker was more than happy to let tech inspector Todd Bechtel take a peak inside his # 8 racer, and picked up his first win of the season.  George Beckett finished second, Rance Garlock third, Mike Altobelli, Jr. fourth, and Shawn Claar fifth.  Robbie Black, Andy Teno, John Bookwalter, Shawn Bilger, and Matt Parks rounded out the top ten.

Heats went to Tim Smith, Jr. and Beckett.

Jim Sayler picked up his second win in a row in the Street Stock division.  Sayler started second in the feature event, but immediately dropped back to fifth on the start.  Pole sitter Terry Wyles looked to be a sure bet for the win until he broke half way through the race.  Ashley Barrett inherited the lead, but Sayler was knocking at the door.  Sayler passed Barrett and secured the win.  Bob Jay, Travis Calhoun, and Matt Sala finished the top five.  Sixth through tenth went to Willie Ling, Rick Cragan, Jr., Shane Molovich, Donald Wyles, and John Pahulick.

Sayler and Calhoun won the heat events.

Mike Duck continued his dominance in the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks, taking his third win of the season.  Duck won easily over Chuck Weyant, Lincoln Ritchey, Terry Norris, and Barry Weyandt.  Sixth through tenth went to Shawn Wyles, Brian Weyandt, Jr., Brandon LaSalle, AJ Foor, and Robert Weist.

Chuck Weyant and Shawn Wyles won the heats.

Friday, June 24th will be a regular 4 division show consisting of Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.  The raindate for this show will be Sunday, June 26th.

Coming up on Sunday, July 3rd is the Firecracker 35 PA State Invitational for Super Late Models.  The 35 lap race will pay $2,500 to win, and $200 to start.  Tow money will paid to non-qualifiers.  The purse is over $4,000 more than last year's July holiday show.  Gates open at 4pm, with hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30.  The raindate for this event in Monday, July 4th.  All gate and race times will start one hour earlier on the raindate.  The Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser-Hobby Stocks will also be on hand.
